Alumni Spotlight: Makenzie Walk | Class of 2020

Makenzie launched Knock on Wood during her time in CEO, creating home goods and décor with a personal, handcrafted touch.

She graduated from Eastern Illinois University in Spring 2024 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, double majoring in Biochemistry and Biological Sciences. Today, she is at Washington University in St. Louis, conducting research in a biological chemistry lab while working toward her PhD in Chemistry.

“One of the biggest lessons I learned from CEO was to take the opportunities that come to you, even if they seem scary or intimidating at first. The program also prepared me with the necessary skills and confidence to take on these challenges. Because of the practice I had with public speaking, I was much more willing to present my research at local and national conferences and to speak with leaders in the field. CEO also showed me the importance of mentoring. It led me to seek out mentors who have been instrumental in my career and also to mentor others when I have had the chance. Without CEO, I would not be in the place I am today.”

“In five years, I will have finished my program and received my doctorate. I hope to have started my career as a scientist and to use my skills and experience to make a positive impact.”
