Alumni Spotlight: Makayla Cook | Class of 2021
As the founder of Ruby Fresh, Makayla built a business centered on handmade car air fresheners, gaining firsthand experience in product development, marketing, and sales. Her time in CEO sparked a passion for entrepreneurship and laid the groundwork for the professional path she’s on today.
Makayla recently earned her Bachelor’s degree in Agribusiness Economics from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. She is currently working in the Fayette County Clerk and Recorder’s Office, where she helps manage vital public records and supports county administrative operations.
“This program taught me how to think creatively and act confidently. It challenged me to step outside my comfort zone, especially when it came to presenting ideas, networking with local business leaders, and speaking in public. It gave me the tools to approach opportunities with a professional mindset and taught me the value of hard work, adaptability, and community involvement.”
“In five years, I see myself continuing to work in a people-focused role within an industry I’m passionate about, such as agriculture or public service. I also hope to be starting a family and staying active in my local community, using the leadership skills I developed through programs like CEO to give back and make a difference.”
